ACE Marae

Ke ora! Here are some photos of the Maori ceremony called a “Powhiri” that we attended today. This ceremony honored my arrival in New Zealand by welcoming me onto the Marae (meeting house) located at Auckland College of Education. We were called onto the Marae and then speeches were conducted in Maori by the Kaumatua (elder) and returned by our representative who spoke on our behalf. There was singing after each speech (waiata) in Maori. Then Diana requested through the spokeman that the quilt be blessed as it will be displayed at the venues where she speaks. Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Dunedin, Christchurch and finally Whangarei where it will be presented to a representative of Te Tari ora Puna o Aotearoa/New Zealand Childcare Association.

ACE Marae

The picture with Diana and the Kaumatua is called a Hongi and at the end of the ceremony it is customary to touch noses and foreheads. It is a form of respect.

Attention to Play
The issue was raised whether RIE encouraged independence rather than interdependency. The word autonomous was used as an alternative to independence. This is an ongoing issue that will be addressed at the Specialist Intensive Programme.
