Positions

The Executive Board

President

A President shall be elected from the SGA. The student must have held a position for at least one (1) year on Council and who will be continuing at Fitchburg State College as a full time student for at last one (1) academic year. The duties of the President shall be as follows:

  • 1. Chair the meetings of the Council and Executive Board.
  • 2. Vote in Council in case of a tie.
  • 3. Represent or appoint a Representative for the SGA on all public occasions.
  • 4. Be an ex-officio non-voting member of all committees.
  • 5. Appoint students to vacant Council positions with the approval of Council, with the exception of the Student Trustee, as stated in Article 3 Section 6.
  • 6. Appoint all committee chairpersons excluding those set forth in Article 1 Section 1.
  • 7. Have the power to dismiss appointees with a two-thirds (2/3) approval of Council.
  • 8. Have the power to freeze funding of any SGA organization, if the organization is in violation of the financial guidelines or is doing discredit to the college in any way, subject to review of the Finance Committee. See Article 7 Section 5. I. Employ and supervise any professional, supervisory and clerical staff deemed necessary to implement the policies and activities of the SGA. Employment offers and contracts must be ratified by a majority vote of the Council on a yearly basis.

Vice President

A Vice-President shall be elected from anyone who has held a position on Council for at least one (1) year and will be continuing at Fitchburg State College for one (1) full year as a full time student. The duties of the Vice President shall be as follows:

  • 1. Assume the duties of the President in the event of his/her inability to perform the duties as President; or as delegated by the President.
  • 2. Serve at the President's discretion as an ex-officio non-voting member of any committee of the Council, with the exception of the Finance Committee.
  • 3. Be a voting member of the Finance Committee.
  • 4. Chair the Club Senate as a non-voting member.
  • 5. Plan and coordinate Council retreats, Transitional Dinners, and other duties as designated by the President.

Treasurer

A Treasurer is to be elected from anyone who had held a position on Council as well as to be encouraged to have been a Treasurer for a funded organization for at least one ( l) semester. This student must be a full time student who will be continuing at Fitchburg State College for at least one (1) academic year. The duties of the Treasurer are as follows:

  • 1.Preside over the budgeting process of all SGA funds.
  • 2. Chair the SGA Finance Committee.
  • 3. Report to the Council on the SGA's budget quarterly and the end of each semester.
  • 4. Oversee all SGA financial transactions with the approval of the President.
  • 5. Jointly with the President, have the power to freeze funding of any SGA organization if the organization is in violation of the Financial Guidelines or doing discredit to the College in any way, subject to review of the Finance Committee. See Article VII. Section V.
  • 6. In cooperation with the Finance Committee, recommend for approval and consent of Council, a budget for the SGA funds.
  • 7. Convene budget meetings for Classes, Clubs and Organizations.

Secretary

A Secretary must be a full time student who has held a position on Council for one (1) semester and will be continuing at Fitchburg State College for at least one (1) academic year elected from the student body. The duties of the Secretary are as follows

  • 1. Keep the minutes and agenda of all Council and Executive Board meetings.
  • 2. Post the minutes of the Council meetings on the SGA Bulletin Boards and distribute to the President of the College and the Vice-president of Student Affairs within seventy-two (72) hours after the meeting.
  • 3. Maintain and report to the Executive Board attendance records for all measures passed by the Council and Executive Board and post them.
  • 4. Maintain an active file with the Vice-President of the minutes of Club Senate.
  • 5. Bring to the attention of the Executive Board any Council Member who has not fulfilled their obligation as stated in Article V, Section I-VI.

Public Information Director

A Public Information Director is to be a full time student elected from the student body, who has held a position on the SGA Council for at least one (1) semester. The duties of the Public Information Director are as follows:

  • 1. Chair the Public Development and the Elections Committees.
  • 2. Maintain lines of communication with the college newspaper and radio station.
  • 3. Publicize the acts of Council.
  • 4. Oversee the process of filling vacant Council positions.
  • 5. Be an ex-officio non-voting member of the First Year Class and attend all of their meetings.

Student Trustee

The Student Trustee shall be a full time student, elected from the Student Body, and in conformance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 15A, Section 21 and other applicable law. The duties of the Student Trustee are as follows:

  • 1. Attend all regular Fitchburg State College Trustee Meetings.
  • 2. Represent Fitchburg State College at all state-wide Student Trustee meetings as deemed necessary by the Student Trustee.
  • 3. Advise and report to the Executive Board and Council all agenda items for upcoming Trustees meetings and seek the advise of Council on all matters deemed necessary by the Executive Board.
  • 4. Report all decisions of the Board of Trustees to Council.
  • 5. Abide by Trustee By-Laws and SGA Constitution.
  • 6. Research and report to Council any pertinent legislation that will affect students at Fitchburg State College.
  • 7. Chair the Scholarship Committee.

Class Officers

A. The President shall:

  • 1. Call and preside over all meetings of the class and/or its officers.
  • 2. Represent the class at all public occasions.
  • 3. Oversee all duties of the officers
  • 4. Present class reports to the SGA Council on a weekly basis.
  • a) Special Duties: The First Year Class President shall chair the SGA Awards Committee.

B. The Vice- President shall:

  • 1. Assume all duties of the President in his/her absence.
  • 2. Assume responsibilities of making recommendation to Council to fill any vacant class officer positions during the academic year.
  • 3. Represent the Class at Club Senate.

C. The Treasurer shall:

  • 1. Keep an accurate record of all funds for said class.
  • 2. Keep all records of expenditures and transactions open to the class and its officers upon demand.
  • 3. Be an active member of the SGA Finance Committee.
  • 4. Be aware of and abide by the current school financial policy.

D. The Secretary shall:

  • 1. Keep the minutes of all meetings of the said class.
  • 2. Post and distribute the minutes of those meetings in the SGA office no later than seventy-two (72) hours after the meeting.
  • 3. Maintain attendance records for all class officers.

E. The Representative shall:

  • 1. Access the needs of the class and make recommendations to its officers.
