Some Basic Help on Dowdloading/ Installation of Software

What is a license? There are few types:

* Commercial Software: This is non shareware/freeware (ie. WordPerfect, Windows), and normally there is a higher license fee.

* Donationware: The software is free for your usage, but if you enjoy it, and want to continue to use the program, send a donation to the developers.

* Freeware: The application is usually free for non-commercial use. Commercial institutions should consult the developers before using the application.

* Shareware: Usually has a 30 day free evaluation period. If you continue to use it after the trial period, you must register/pay for that application.

Please note: If you require more information about any of these products, I encourage you to contact the developers.

Downloading

Downloading is as easy as 1-2-3. When you find the application you would like to download in the directory index file, simply click on the Name of the application. For example, let say you want to download the Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0. Scroll down until you come to g3230p.exe Click on the name of the application and you will be prompted with the following information:

This is a normal message, so do not worry. All this means is that Netscape (or any other browser) does not know how to display this file on screen and it is asking you what to do next. Click on "Save File". Another box will come up asking where you want to place the file on your computer. I recommend you make a directory called temp and download everything into that directory. After the download has completed, open your File Manager or Explorer and unzip/execute the application. If the file has an extention of 'exe' it is selfextracting. If the file is a 'zip' file, it must be unzipped. This will require that some version of the unzip program be installed on your computer system.(Click on following image to get program.)

If you need such a program, you should download and install the appropriate version compatible with your operating system. Note that all these programs contain some type of readme file(s) which will provide further information about the installation and these files should be read before the actual installation. However, most programs can be installed simply by running the 'install' or 'setup' program and following the instructions when prompted. Many more downloadable programs are available on the net.
